Nothing is More Revealing Than

MOVEMENT

The Origin Of Aerial Silks

Have you ever seen one of those movies where a woman is twirling and twisting around on a rope made of silk? Every amazing acrobatic feat is met with oohs and aahs from the audience and in most occasions it is followed with a standing ovation. You may not realize this but the techniques used by these performers are quite difficult. But what most people will not believe is that the entire concept is quite old.

You can find evidence of aerial silks being performed as far back as 2000 BC in the Minoan culture. Back then there was no circus tent. Instead, the performers used to perform on the backs of bulls. And to make matters worse, the bulls were running as well. There are similar depictions in Egyptian and Greek art from the time. These performances were usually a part of various religious festivals and performed sparingly throughout the year.

As far as the modern circus is concerned, it can be traced back to ancient Roman times. A circus was originally meant to be a building which was used for performances. These buildings featured acrobats, jugglers, chariot races, etc. Performers used to travel all across Europe & display their skills. This is when the idea of passing on your skills to your children was nurtured as well.

The circus took on quite a lot of change since then and constant upgrades led to many people like the Wallenda family becoming famous worldwide simply for their aerial performances. Their biggest feat was a high wire act in Madison Square Garden. Doesn't sound so great? Well there was no net below them since it had been lost during transit. Sounds a lot more spectacular now doesn't it? The possibility of falling to their death brought a whole new meaning to the term "high-wire." This paved the way for aerial acts which are still around today like the Cirque Du Soleil & Cirque Noir.

But all of this is quite raw when compared with the aerial silks you see today. There are performers in circuses as well in Las Vegas shows. This dance form has a whole different meaning and is usually used to tell a story. And do you know the best part? People are turning to aerial silks class Austin as a terrific way of losing weight.
